How to keep your hunting dogs fit...

Post by JonBailey64 »

...if you live in the city or suburbs with little yard space.

What I might do is leash my dogs to my bicycle with special equipment to safely do it.

My field dogs, a future black Labrador Retriever and an American Foxhound (Running Walker or equivalent) would be pedaled around the football field at my local high school daily, weather permitting, for up to 20 laps or five miles.

Of course, not as puppies but once they are grown up and gradually worked into this level of shape. All this pedaling will keep me fit as well.

Hounds and Sporting breeds, especially the fast leggy ones, need to be run a lot to keep in shape and avert boredom, excessive barking or destructive behavior. These hunting dogs were designed to run forever.

Of course, if you live in the country on the farm or ranch you can let your dogs run forever every day over the rural spread to chase rabbits, squirrels, crows, foxes and whatnot.

You seriously need to get the 2 John wick books "A Walk with Wick" and read them cover to cover at least 3 times.

As a former American soldier, I know the value of P.T. every morning. Train your hounds like soldiers: stand tall, look good and charge like an angry bee-stung bull named Ferdinand in the field. But at home, be gentle and smell the lovely flowers in the ladies' hair.

But as General Patton once warned, "Every greenhorn foxhound is gun-shy on his first outing in the field."
