Coltons first tom

Post by chilcotin hillbilly »

Picked up on a snowed in track that was made yesterday, looked like a good mature tom but not to old. Had my 12 year old son Colton along to take his first cougar. Started the track for a couple miles not letting the the hounds go until the tracks freshend up. The cat must have made a circled and crossed just ahead of us, because when we hit the fresh track my dog Buffy was gone. I quickly let Rudy and my 7 month old pup Burger go to give Buffy a hand. With in 5 minutes they had the tom treed in a leaning pine tree. the cat was not more then 15 feet off the ground and all the dogs were taking turns climbing the tree to with in 8 feet of the cat. My son showed up with in a minute or so and harvested the tom with a good heart shot. The cat jumped the tree and ran past Colton with Buffy and Burger hot on its tail, Rudy who was tied back pulled the christmas tree out and took it for a run. The cat only made it 25 yards and was stone cold dead. When I got there all the dogs were having a good chew even the pup was going nuts. The tom measured 9'1" and the skull green scored 15'3/8 inchs. Only wieghed 175# which is kind of small for this area. Man what a great day. Colton has got the itch.

Pat I live in the Caribou/ Chilcotin area of BC. This tom was no more then5 years old. Although he had a big melon his body was not as thick as an older tom. MInd you he was not very fat which makes a difference. A big tom will go over 200# quite often in this area.

Congrats on the catch, and pass the same along to your son. I have some friends up near that country and you all take some big Toms.
