Training Collars

Post by newby »

Hey...looking at getting a training collar. What do you guys know about the Sportdog 2400? I'm comparing it to a Tri-Tronics classic 70 G2 ($319) and it looks like the Sportdog ($189) is WAY more collar for the money. Everyone thinks Tri-Tronics when they talk training collars, but I'm looking for a good deal too. Is Tri-Tronics that much better? What's your opinion?

Don't know anything about the Sportdog but make sure you get a long range collar. Most of the time that you need to shock a dog they will be two ridges over chasin deer or something that they aint suppose to.

This particular Sportdog is rated for 1.5-2 miles. The Tri-tronics is only rated at 1 mile. Right now I'm doing some pretty close-range hunting (coon) and so I get to stay pretty close to my dog. Just wanted to know if anybody's had any experience (good or bad) with the Sportdog.

That's a good point, I haven't really compared their warranties. Does anyone else have any input?

So I checked out the warranties...the sportdog is a lifetime warranty on parts, but you only get one year labor warranty. The tri-tronics has a 2 year parts and labor warranty and a 30 day money back guarantee. If anybody else has any input on this I need to hear it cause I don't think I can wait to buy one any longer.

I got a pup I really want to hunt but I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. I watched him trail a feeder coon track through a pasture the other morning like he was on a rope til a doe and fawn jumped out of their beds and ran right in front of him...needless to say, I had an hour deer race on my hands and no way to reach out and touch him. A collar would have done wonders in that scenario. Love to hear any input.

The tri tronics is the best but i am in the same boat as you newby. The sportdog 2500 is what i chose. It is good for 1.5 and up to six dogs. The tri tronics is probably better but I have seen the sportdog in action and it worked great. Also about half the price of the tritronics gr500 exp.

I hated my sportdog system with a passion. The hand held needed new battery's every two weeks or the signal would shorten a bunch. With the tritronics you can recharge everything every time out and the two hardly deserve to be compared with each other. The tritronics will reach way out there. If you cant afford the tritronics wait until you can it will be worth the sacrifices you have to make to save up the money.

You wont regret sending it back and getting the real deal. You will make up the difference in gas and battery's in a few years.

Nice website tony.

Thanks for the honest input guys...I think I'm gonna go for the tri-tronics classic 70 G2 EXP. Buddy on this site is offering it at a better price to members than I could find anywhere else. He's beating everyone by $25...pretty good deal. Anyway, thanks again. Guess you get what you pay for :?

I just got my new Tri-Tronics from Buddy! Haven't used it yet, but I was really pleased with the service and the PRICE! If any of you need a new collar and you're a member, he'll give you a GREAT deal. Send him a PM and he'll hook you up. Now for the set-up races...he's gonna hate deer when I get done with him  .

By the way, do you guys suggest just lighting him up hard the first time out (he's kind of hard-headed and really LOVES a deer), or should I start at the lightest setting and work my way up? Just wondering if I should skip a step and show him that deer HURT!
Thanks.

Heres what I did.... put dummy collor on dog for about 12-14 days, then put real collar on a day before I went out........I take dog out in daylight by it'sself, find deer, let him stick hi nose in the track, soon as his tail starts to wagging and he takes 2-3 steps on track, I bumped him on level 2. If he keeps going, I hold button on level 2 for about 3 seconds, if he keeps going, I hold button on level 3 for about 3 seconds. If dog don't stop, just keep doing level 3....... if dog still don't stop, he probably will not stop, so wait for dog to come back, go out next day and repeat process.

Some dogs are destined to run deer and even if you do get them to stop........the real test is in Nov-Dec when deer are in rut!!!!!! or they get with another deer runner! I have seen dogs straight as an arrow till Nov-Dec gomes along!!!!!!!

This is only my opinion.....please get as many opinions as possible, cause electricity is no joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
