Looking for alion dog

I'm finally ready to get into this! I'm looking for a pup (under a year) to get started. Anyone able to point me in the right direction? I've been bumming around this site for years and finally bought my country house to get some hounds. I want to start with one at a time and see how I do

Take a drive 2 Utah or AZ anywhere, get out, throw a rock in any direction and you're liable 2 hit 3 houndsmen and 15 dogs with that one rock. For Lions 8 out of 10 dogs will turn out. Personally i like the NM & AZ dogs.

nabowhunter, If you stick with your plan of just starting one pup at a time you will do great I see so many new comers to the sport with half a dozen pups and that takes away from the enjoyment of the sport real fast and with just one pup your odds of it turning out are alot better. Nabowhunter, DON"T START WITH PUPS!!! I tried to get into it with 1 pup and now all I have is 1 trashy hound that will chase cat but also everything else. Of course I live in the city and can't get out like I could if I was in the country, but I reccomend buying an older lion dog.

I'm sure someone on here has an older lion dog that isn't as fast as they once were and they need to make room for the young blood. Buy that dog, hunt it and then use it to train a pup, you can do it one at a time like you want to but you are going to save your self alot of time and frustration by getting that old dog. That pup will learn from you and that old dog, then when that young dog has a fever for lion and is trash broke you can use it to train the next pup you get. Then your problems will be trying to find those cold nosed decendents with lots of grit and speed.

Don't be like me out their with the drags, climbing over rocky ridges yelling every curse word imaginable on a deer chase. Train your dog on the real deal, showing them game with an experienced dog when they are young.

bawlmouth lol the things you posted are what i'm looking for! I like that kind of stuff, I like starting from scratch. 8 out of 10 guys told me to buy a started dog, but the other 2 are all I needed to hear lol. If I cant get it to work in a few years I will buy a started dog and start over and take all the I told you so's. I'm so pumped I worked so hard to get a house and now I can enjoy it!

Euphoria ("pumped") oftentimes gets in the way of clear thinking and planning. Of course, it's your deal, but why make it hard on yourself? Good luck.

Nothing like taking a young pup and teaching that hound to run track and and catch. To me, that's what's it is all about: a new hunter and a young hound growing up so to speak on a track and learning to get it done. If a person is only interested in seeing a lion then jump in with somebody and go see one....but if you want to learn to catch one, then taking a finished hound from another hunter to catch a lion just shortcuts the fun of the whole thing.......

Ike said it best, as far as pumped getting in the way of planning. I've been planing for 3 years reading about hounds, hiking cat country, and so on. The last 2 years in a row I've been able to see cats just wearing out some boot leather. Might not sound like much but I'm vary happy seeing the cats I've seen without hounds. The pumped I was talking about is I can finally do it right, and know what I'm looking to get out of hound hunting. If I could get a dog to just run a lion track and loose it in a half mile this year I would be tickled pink.

do yourself a favor and get a pup. Most year old dogs that people are selling is because they dont cut it in there pen, and thats not cuz the dog is junk but probably not brought up right or been around enough game. I have done it all and the yearling dog was my biggest mistake

Nabowhunter, I wish you luck. I reccomend Walk with Wick if you havn't read it yet. It doesn't have anything to do with chasing lions but has some really good tips on raising pups and and training.

I agree with Ike and the others as there has to be a higher sense of satisfaction if one takes a pup and works with it and it turns out to be a cold nosed cat catching machine, but I don't think there is anything wrong with running young dogs with older dogs that can help them along on the trail.

I would take a closer look at those pups Liontracker has in the classified section, sounds like your serious and he might sell you one.
