Washington bear huntin gone wrong

Post by treeing walkers »

Before everyone tells me it is not legal, I have a permit from the state to bait and hound hunt them stinkin things.
I don't have BEAR dogs but I do have decent cat dogs so I figured I 'll try it out. Headed back down the mountain and kept gettin bumps finally they struck hard, they got down acting real weird ?? in and out of the road not openin went in and back out. came to a cliff wind to us and they both just sat there smellin the air, after about a min of that they bolted down the road at a wide open run. I was trying to catch up and come flyin around a corner and here is my dogs runnin back at me tail tucked and look like they just saw their maker. LOL I couldn't figure it out so I went around the corner and in the middle of the road commin at me is a 300-350 bear starin right at me. He was chasin my dogs back up the road LOL He turned and walked about ten yards and turned back around and stood on two and looked at me and the scared dogs went back to all 4s and walked right off the road. this whole time I'm tryin to stop the truck and drive it reach back behind my seat and get the rifle and put bullets in it. Goin back with some real bear dogs and try again. My buddy I talked to that is on the permit said those kind of bears that will run the dogs are mean and usally will kill the dogs ??? Any you bear hunters vouch for that as the last thing I want is my decent cat dogs die on a bear, but I don't think they will mess with him or another one after that ?? Hopefully after this weekend I'll get some pics on here of Washington bears over some hounds ??

never seen them chase a dog but we've had them sit at the base of a tree and fight with the dogs esp. in the 300-400plus range. they don't like to climb. but not saying they dont cause you can't be there all the time to see whats going on.

ive had 4 dogs killed by bear in 20 years--all of them were what i call young n dumb-- every one was there first season--

older dogs seem to get banged up alot but not killed - so i guess they just learned what they can get away with -
- if u hunt them you risk losing them -- if they are too gritty they get hurt --if they arent a little bit gritty u will get run off alot - best to hunt them a few times with dogs that know the game

You just explained my dogs to a T.. LOL cat dogs.. Mine will go to the vet's time and time again for a lion on the ground, but touch a bear.. Hell No.... LOL.. The only dog that we had that was a gritty bear dog, decided to make a go at one bayed up in a log.. He was on the losing end of that battle and died at the vet's office... I prefer to hunting my cat dogs on bears then bears dogs on bears.. Lot less vet bills

Shake it off bud. Brains has caught way more game than Grit has.

Besides, it's up to the bear, it ain't up to the dogs. Sounds like that bear decided he wasn't going to be caught that day. ;)

My disposition is way different on Monday morning than it is on Friday afternoon. Try that bear again on a Friday evening after he's had time to get liquored up for the weekend. ;)

ive huntd bear my whole life with dogs and every bear is catchable not always in a tree maybe on the ground i think a good bear dog will bay the hell out of it but not turn and run but keep their distance but stick with it i have 2 dogs that wont back down but wont get themselfs killed so its a walk in and cut the bear off and take it on the ground and thats always fun and nerve racking

a bear pack needs to have some grit. if they are going to go in and take a bite they beter have some help from the ohter side thats what gets them up or stoped. i have seen bears pick out one dog and chase him down if not for the other dogs on his butt that dog would be dead when i run bear i want alot of grit or at least a dog that will bay real tight but with that being said not all of my dogs are good cat dogs but they hold there own on a mean bear

Bingo!

Don't fool yourself into figuring it couldn't/can't or decided to not be caught that day. Maybe not be caught by your scared catdogs that day, yeah. Alot of bear will try out the dogs chasing them to see if they really need to run. They just don't all do it the same way or at the same times. It doesn't take dogs running down their throat and out their butt to catch bear neither. Rolling balls of fighting fury are few and far between if ever. All your buddy meant if hes worth his salt is that bear will try his dogs out now probably for sure as well. Initially it may not run from them just try to run them off because it succeeded in that once. It may get nasty but at some point bear like that do get nasty over the course of a day if the dogs do stick it all out. But thats the part you can't judge! Hell it may do anything next time. One dog sticking thru a few bluffs and charges may tree it right next to the truck. Probably not but maybe. I haven't lost one directly to a bear in 15 years. Careers ended yep a couple. Might of lost some if I wouldn't have gone to them but that don't count either. Vet bills don't mean much though when analyzing the grit of a dog. Dogs usually get caught when they have no room or not enough time to retreat far enough for whatever reason. Usually it doesn't mean they are trying to crawl down its throat.

What would have been your assumption w/out seeing the bear?

If you hunt long enough you will not only see your dogs chased but you will be to. Only twice in 50 plus years but that was enough.

There are dogs that will run a running bear, and bay a bear from a safe distance, and then there are Bear Dogs!! I wouldn't bet the farm on getting your lion dogs on a bear again. Most dogs see a lion as a big house cat, but they see a bad bear as the devil himself. Most dogs lack the mental toughness to make Top bear dogs. I didn't say thay wouldn't chase and tree an easy bear, those are not "top"bear dogs. My hounds will wind and flush pheasants, but that doesn't make them bird dogs.

im with bookem, ever critter is catchable, you just need to find yourself some dogs that will do it on a regular basis. sure they might get out ran or out faught once in a while but if they are consistantly catching you game than thats all that matters. and as for grit, yes you can catch or tree some easy bears without it but your not going to stop a mean one for very long with out grit and your sure as hell not going to tree a mean one if the dogs are standing back and giving him lots of space. Grit to me isnt killing power its sticking power and if you want to catch them they better stick like white on rice lol
