how early should you expect a puppy to start showing interest in caged critters...?

It all depends on how your pups are bred. There are too many factors in this question and it doesn't determine how your pup will finish out.

Its nice to see a pup get all fired up at a young age, but i'd rather see them using their nose.

That bein said, we've got some 3 month old pups that will try and pull a coon through a cage, just haven't had time to take them out and see if they can put anything in a tree.

I had a buddy a long time ago buy an old hound from a guy to lion and bear hunt with. He goes over to this guy's house and he pulls out a caged coon and shows my buddy how that old big dog would chew on and fight a caged coon, so the guy buys him thinking that he was good to go.........

Short of the story is that dog might have treed one lion in his life, and would usually trail out several miles then turn the track around and bring it back to the truck. If the lion was jumped quickly, then he'd locate and tree most of the time but never made a long run.

My point is just because a hound will fight a caged coon, or is gritty, doesn't help or a sure that a dog will ever learn to trail or finish a track. I'll take a hound that loves to trail over a caged coon fighter any day of the week.........

Not sure what your idea of the "real thing" is for a 3 month old pup. To each his own....but i'm happy if my "pups" will trail rabbits, deer, skunks, mustangs or whatever as long as their runnin to catch.

Ya poser I would have to agree with u I have seen a lot of pups that started on a cage and progress to trailing and treeing their own game on some very long and difficult chases but as for a 3 month old pup on real thing from trailing to treeing to being gritty on the ground, I really want to see some of those pups they might just be worth their weight in gold. good times buddy.

Mntwalker- I got to see the pups in person this weekend and all I have to say is WOW! They sure are something else. I'm just glad I got one. Thanks again bud.

Poser- I don't know what these guys are talking about as far as the real thing goes, but those pups impressed the hell out of me. I guess some people have 3 month old pups that are out catching lions on the moon...

I'm sure happy with what I saw... Goodtimes buddy, can't wait for this winter.
