what is the shelf life of scent? can it go bad? i have some of cronks lion scent. is this brand any good?

I like the cronks scent. Always had a decent shelf life and he uses alot of glands. I found my best results came from keeping it in the fridge....

What is the shelf life of the grawes? I've had some in my fridge for almost 6 months is it still good?

It should still be good. I know Grawes uses sodium benzoate in his gland scents to help keep them from spoiling. I also put some glycerin in mine.

good advice about the glycerin...and yes the 6 months scent should still be good. Devin is right about grawes also, they have some excellent product.

The problem you run into is there are some scents that are alcohol based and if they stay out and are not kept cool you'll know it

You can store any scent n the fridge and not have a negative effect. Cold temps slowed down the bacteria and breakdown.

I have used a lot of them but Grawes has done the best for me, and I also keep it in the fridge in a Zip-Lock back over the bottle or Jar and it keeps a long time. His lion scent is excellent, and lays a long lasting low trail similar to a real lion track. The bobcat scent he has is absolutley great!
I have on of the old heavy long leather drags, and I have a 20 ft. peive of cotton soft rope snapped to it. I keep it moist in a garbage bag knotted but wet it down when it dries out inside.

Now here is a tip or two to make a fun trailing game for your young dogs. I did this one for two walker pups this morning and it worked out well. I went out in the hills and I had my faithful trainer in a heavy wire cage where it could not be injured. I got out when I found a suitable tree off in the distance, and and went and secured the trainer up pretty high. Ok I had my drag and my Grawes scent in a plastic bag. I doped up the drag a bit and kept a small stick with some of the scent on it to carry along. I had rubber boots, and had sprayed down with scent shield just to eliminate an excess of human odor.I take off from that tree and I made about a three mile circle. I would go thru brush over rocks and as close to tree bases as possible to make it simulate how a cat walks. Every so often on really bare spots I would find a rock or a small scrub or weed and rub it as I passed with the scented twig. I went up the side of one drainage crossed over the divide and came back down the other side of it and came back past where the trainer was about 1/2 a mile and then crossed a dirt road. I stopped the drag there and put it back in the sack sealed it up and then I walked back to my truck staying right on the hard road. I then drove back home put all my stuff away, and then loaded the two pups up and headed back out there. By this time the scent from where I had started was over 1 1/2 hours old. It was a mild, fairly cool morning 58-deg. and low humidity. Well I got up fairly close to where the drag hity the road, say 400 yards, and then got the pups out and startd to slowly road them from there. Ofcourse they had to run around and do their thing for a few minutes, but then they settled down trotting down the road in front of me. When they hit the spot where the drag hit the road they struck immediatly and inh a second we had a run going. I let them get going good on it and then cut ahead in the truck and went around and got up on a point where I could here and listen to them. They both have really good bawl mouthes on them so it sounded really good. Every so often they would make a loss or over run but they kept it going steady, and it was fun to watch their team effort on it. The scent got a little better as they neared the cage tree as there was more on it when I started and that is why making a drag away from the tree works best. They start with a fainter trail and it gets some better as they move it.

Boy when they hit the tree it was really a fun deal, and they did a great job..Try it.

Here is the lion scent I use. It's probably not as effective as Cronk's or Grawes but it's all I can afford on a fixed income.

HoundDawg does that come in a smaller bottle ?? How do you lay a scent drag with that ?? looks like it might try and bite you ?? hopefully it comes with instructions ??
