I think you should talk to buddy about making a sticky out of this post big horn, maybe over in the pup training section right under Leonard's puppy training deal. And I'd leave the title just like it is, "Making a lion hound without any help." You could give us a day by day report on the development of that young pup and help some of the newbies out by sharing all that how-to stuff with them.....just an idea!

:D Hey. thats actually a pretty good idea ike. be neet to see her blue pup progress. The only problem i see with that though, Is Tessa acually has friends, that want to take their dogs an go hunt with her and her pup. So would that be cheating on makein a dog with no help if someone else hunted with them? Or does she have to catch her own lion or bobcat first?

I am all for her taking the time and effort to keep us up dated with the training and progress of her pup. one of the main reasons many of the newbies join this site is for training information from those people who have had success in training a hound. people who are willing and able to help guide new hunters in training and handling their hounds in a positive way have my respect. teaching and supporting new hunters in the sport of hound hunting is one of the most positive and effective methods of saving and preserving our sport for the future.
I haven't seen any post on here saying the reason the person was disappointed in the sport or site was it had to many threads or individuals who offered good training advice. I have seen many post regarding the number of post regarding ego's or trash talking and threats. I support all ethical sport hunters. if they choose to use a trap or a bow or black powder etc. it makes no difference as we all share the pursuit of game as a hobby or pastime. when hunters start to fight and point fingers and puff up their chest they do nothing but give THEIR sport a bad image.
There's one way to stand out of a group of people. by being different! Not always a bad thing. The method a person selects to be different says a great deal about that person. I know many seasons are closed right now but there are many new hounds being trained and brought up for the upcoming season. I"d much rather see and hear how they are doing then to hear about some interpersonal conflicts. that type of shit is dressed up and paraded in a million different disguises on television 24 hours a day anymore. hell I'd rather hear about your horse throwing a shoe then hear someone say how much better their hounds are then someone else's.
So PLEASE take the time to document and share the training methods and progress of your pup.

Hey, I watched that little video clip and knew that big horn had plenty to offer many of you. Seriously my vote goes for a sticky so she can have her own space to share those adventures.......

houndnem wrote:I started my first pups without help from older dogs. it was not easy, but they ended up better dogs than dogs that learned from other dogs. just not nearly as quick. I started by letting them bark at a trapped coon, and eventually I let it out and they got to chew on it. after that I would let it out and give it a head start. once they were gamey and the snow flew, I would walk them down lion tracks coaxin them all the way till it got so smokn hot they pulled away and opened. the first two lions I caught I pretty much ran em down all but the last 200 yards and then I had to keep em treed till the pups came back and learned how to tree.

A person does need to check the proclamation and state laws before trapping coons, holding them in a cage or releasing them though as it might not be legal where you live. In Utah, the Department of Agriculture has a set of laws that were developed prevent the expansion or introduction of raccoons in that state. I believe the law says a person can not hold a coon in a cage or release it, which basically means you either have to killed a trapped coon or call Wildlife Services to come remove it from the trap.

A couple years back, UDWR wrote one of the local hound clubs a ticket for using a caged coon in their field trials. I never heard what the outcome was, but they did get a ticket from two of the local conservation officers. Bottom line is check your state and local laws before you cage a coon for training and/or post about it on the NET......

I'd hate to see any of the young people get hammered for breaking the law if they received their information from this board.

Hey, good call Ike. I never even thought of that. so many people do it that I never thought to check and see if it were against the law. you are right and very bad advise on my part. sorry to all, I will be more careful in my advise next time because although that is a very good way to do it, it might not be legal in your state. I did all my caged coon training out of state of coarse.

man that is tempting!
Big horn, what did you do drag some skeletons out of Ikes closet? I haven't seen him tread so lightly since I ever got on here. I'm glad though, That thread that just ended in the cage was garbage and nothing more. I hold myself just as guilty as I hold Ike for the way that one turned out. Ike, if your listening, here is my public apology. Although I was only speaking my mind on riggin lions part two, it got way out of hand. I know the bridges have been burned as far as ever hunting together, but I would like to go to coffee with you sometime and squash the beef face to face. Even if we can't be freinds,(and I don't think either of us care to) we don't have to be enimies either. I'm man enough to apologize, are you? guess it don't matter much, but I feel kinda bad about the mud I slung.

Seen a bunch of poopies, lion and bobcat included   Ton of game just around my house here I haven't had time with work to go too far and explore alot of the mountain property yet. I know the general area very well as my son and I used to run cats just north of here. Tomorrow is my day off and I was hoping to get up on one of the atv's with Bella and see what we could find. I may have to go to the doctor in Sheridan though as I have been having trouble with my legs. If I go I will post some more video or photos. :) Yes this country is rough, but that is where you will find the cats.

Tessa, that's some great looking country you have access to and I wish you the best of luck. It doesn't take too much to reas through posts and see who has common sense. Your pup is in good hands and I'm sure she'll make a cat dog....for sure.

Keep us posted. After reading all about Bella I kinda feel like I should know her! LOL

I had a funeral down in St George last week and had family come home with me afterwards, so I"ve only been able to take a slap now and then as time permits hoiundnem....tessa's hatred for me goes back about six years and I'd say she has burnt any and every bridge that might have ever existed between us houndnem, so don't look for the relationship between she and I to change in the next hundred years..

I'll accept your apology because I'm a big enough man to do that, meaning I can change my mind anytime. I'll give you a call next time I'm in George and maybe we can have a cup of coffee together, after all I did the same for Mike Hutchings after Labrum had pushed me that way a dozen times. If I recall,I gave Mike a couple videos and he gave me a 16 x 20 photo he'd taken of that bitch lion on the red rocks that went around on the Internet a few years back. I have that photo on the wall behind me now......

Labrum told me then that he suggested to Mike that he should jump in with me and go watch my dogs rig a lion, but the request was never made and I have never spoken to him since that day. So yes, coffee is OK!

Mike is a freind of mine. he and I get along alot like you and I do. seems like whenever things got competetive between us,we had some sour feelings, but I could have coffee or hang out with him at his cabin any time. I picture you and him getting along that same way. hell of a cool picture he has, he got a few dogs killed in those cliffs and to my knowlage he don't hunt up there anymore. I still hunt up there alot in the spring when it dries out, and I know any day the same will probably happen to me. mikes brother kirt is probably one of the funnest guys down here to hunt with. have you met him? Their lead dog ethel is a full sister to my "Hook" dog.

bighorn, sorry I highjacked your post to smooth things over with Ike. back to the pup training. did you make it out the other day? do you ever come to utah? I know you will make a hell of a dog out of that btick all by yourself, but if your ever down this way and want to speed the process up a little I'd be glad to have ya.
