Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
Last I heard he ran out of good dollins blood and got into usrus dogs. I would seriously doubt that shane would have a bad thing to say about leo's blood. I've heard he hunts hard,so he should know. I also read he bred his dogs smaller. I've had 100% dollins blood for over 15 years. There's not anyone going to give me a education on this blood ecept for leo. Larry i usually enjoy your posts.

So I guess you are sayin he doesn't hunt hard or know what to expect out of a dog, seems he would have a pretty good unbaised opinion on the dogs considering....... He is pretty well known for hunting harder than most anyone you can think of and then a little harder than that. I doubt he would have anything bad to say as well, and I think he has dealt with his fair share of Dollins dogs and then some. Everyone I know in Id that hunts pretty hard and successfully has quite a bit of respect for Shane, you must not be from Id Cornell. Not too many guys that go to the extent of packing dogs into the back counrty on mules to run bears in wilderness areas.... thats a little too rough for my taste I know that much, I respect the guy.
Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
I didnt know you had to be from Id to hunt hard and know about a bloodline gess I will have to tell all the other houndsmens that if your not from ID you dont know sh%%% because larry said so. You should not belive everything you here

LOL!!!! You might want to research your plott history a little deeper. And yes, even vons dogs were plott "curs". Im not knocking Leos dogs, their just not for me, and there is a reason those big dogs are hard to find, and it ain't cause their so good. Its cause just as it was stated, most people bred or stayed away from drum for obvious reasons.

you really are tryin to make this sound as good as you need it to for yourself aren't ya? I'm not from idaho, whats that translate to in your misconstrued mindset??? I was referring to a person, one single person, that you set out to belittle and discredit, that is from Id, and that has a reputation in Id. A pretty good one at that.
Now pay attention to the punctuation and try to follow along so you don't get confused again, re read as necessary.
far as the hunting hard, well I doubt you take it to the level that the person in question does, i know I sure don't, and I know some pretty hard hunters that seem to think likewise with myself. I know the country that this person hunts, and its rough, to rough for my liking. You obviously have a chip on your shoulder about Shane, maybe you wanted to hear how you were the Dollins plott authority and you need to be contacted to get the scoop on what they really are all about. I can guarantee one thing, I'd rather hear about a dog getting it done where Shane hunts and how Shane hunts then from some egotistical guy in Wisconsin cutting bear tracks with a road every section line. I have been to Wis, I have seen the country there, there may be some swamps and some thick brush, but you are kidding yourself if you think you can prove a bear dog there opposed to the hell that Shane runs em in. Give credit where credit is due, you are talking out your ass

yeah, i think you're right on with all of that, and it sounds like you would be a pretty good guy to talk to as well about the dollins dogs. Not sure whats up with your buddy cornell, but you seem like a pretty good guy.

Well cur dog figured it if you want an old fashion plott go get the a plott that closely resembles a cur. The plott history can go alot of different ways and we are all just speculating. If you argue that your kiding yourself. Not all avoid the pioneer blood. Don't make me out to be a minority. If you like what you see and hear from your dog good for you. Like i said previously, no other hound breed is there so mutch bulls$$t on what should or shouldn't be in a dog. Enjoy your cur dogs. It does sound like your knocking my dogs also. If you want to go there that fine by me. I got alot to talk about when it comes to curs. They sound nice.LOL

Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
Mr. Mellor, First you say you promote Leo Dollins Line of dogs. Then you promote Brandenburgers Pioneer dogs. Which is it your trying to defend or promote with this. Saying a Dollins dog is the same has a Pioneer dog because of looks and size is like calling a apple and a tomato the same because their both red.
Dale Brandenburger got most of his first dogs from Hack Fergusion. Many of those dogs like Sashey Moon and Moon II are in about every big game Line of Plott today. Then, has being the largest Commercial Breeder the Breed has ever known, he wished to tap into the Competition Coon hunting market. He was instrumental in establishing the NPHA in 1953. Drum won the first World Hunt of those days, the first Autumn Oaks Hunt, in 1960. That's what made him famous and he was used to produced over a 1000 pups. The Pioneer Line is a Line of dogs that was produced for the Coon Hunting side of our sport. Now if you guys wish to call this type of dog a "old time" Plott, to each his own.
When I started out with dogs in the mid 70's, Leo Dollins and his great wife were already well establish has accomplished hunters and producers of Plotts in Idaho. I have no idea the exact specifics of the dogs he truly started with or when. But it is no secrect big game dogs that had Drum in them were used in his Line several times. But so were the breeding that's often discribed as the "old west" Breeding. These dogs produced many of the outstanding Lines we know today that came from the west. But they also contained a Line of dogs known as the Cypress dogs. Has far as the "bloodhound look" goes, these dogs had Drum beat in that overwhelmingly. But all this means little to what Leo Dollins produced. His dogs were big game dogs without question. All that is important is what Leo combined together, for what has to be 50 some years now, and what they are, Big Game Dogs. Not some dog produced for the Competition Coon hunting community.
Now maybe I'm missing something here. When Leo left Idaho I didn't keep up with what he was doing or where he was. About that time his wife also quit writing those great articles and stories in Full Cry. But after all those years of hard work and dedication to producing a dog of performance on big game like he did, I'm kinda having a hard time believing he switched to producing anything but the same type of big game dogs when he left. One's that you now compare to the Pioneer dogs. Being a person that also tries to be a big game hunter, and having seen Leo's dog in actions many times on both Bear and Lion, if I was Leo I'd dang near call this a insult.

Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
Ok houndlover wanted to know where old fashion plottlines were, so I told him that I thought Dollins I am not making this an argue session back and forth so if you have some old fashion plottlines that you think say it, if not go away. Also I'm not going to debate Shane with you Larry, I have ment and talked to Shane quite a bit what he says and what Leo says are two diffrent things so if he is hunting hard good for him. Thats all I have to say if you know of an old fashion bloodline say it if not dont say anything

Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
Here's some old fashioned plotts

There is also a lot of FACT in plott history, and im not tryin to make you a minority, you are the one that said that blood was hard to get hold of, I was just going on what you said. Im not bad mouthing Leos line of dogs, he obviously has been a well respected plott man for many years. I mearly stated that they were not my personal preference.
I don't like the way they are built, never will, but I never said they couldn't catch game or make good dogs. The fact is the original plotts, were more cur like than bloodhound, thats no speculation.
Good day

Re: Old Fashion Plott Lines?
Dennis, First I don't say I promote Dollins, I do. If we are going go dig that far back don't you me Hack Smithdeal and Gola Ferguson? Leo's foundation is Drum and Jake that is why I refer to pioneer. You are right when you say Dollins is not all pioneer blood but majority is or goes back to. Leo will tell you this himself. But, you are right he did selective out crosses. I talk to Leo on a regular basis. He knows where I stand on the way his grand kids are breeding his dogs. I'm not saying anything he hasn't heard from me before. There is no one with more of his older blood than us. I keep the Dollins name on all the dogs to give credit where it should be. He also knows this. So don't worry I'm not insulting someone you don't even know. I am also sure he would have to disagree, when you refer to his x-wife as (great wife). So with that said I'm done arguing. I think we all got off track a bit. If you like it hunt it.

Who cares what leo has to say about Shane! I go off of what a guy is, not what others say he is. Shane is well liked in these parts. I hunt with, have traded/sold several dogs to Shane and have never heard him say ill things about Leo. Maybe grab a handful of those BIG Dollin dogs and go hunting with Shane. At the end of the day you will only know two directions, straight up and straight down.
