My biggest problem is e

v[*]ery now and then I'll get one that just will not leave the rabbits alone especially if good game is scarce. I probably shouldn't have said that now I know I'll be trashing on coons befor the week is

out
I have a young lemon spotted gyp that is a year old, that will stay with a rabbit all night. How long do you let yours run rabbits before you do something about it?

Re: Grey fox dogs
If a running dog can run a rabbit and run it right they usually make good fox hounds. Not much runs the loops and goes through the thicket like a rabbit. I let all my pups start on them. Usually have no trouble getting them to leave it alone once they get a peice of a good fox or coyote race. Or a deer race I'm not prejudice lol

Re: Grey fox dogs
I have always tried to stop it as soon as I think it's a rabbit. I have just had training collars for a year or so, so the next one I get that likes rabbits maybe I'll have better success breaking it. I've had several that were so hard to break from running rabbits and a couple that I never did that I've always been scared to let my puppies start on them, I know a lot of fox hunters start their pups on rabbits though. Jkohnke, where I hunt I can see a dozen rabbits in the road after dark or just after daylight, and might take a hour or two for the hounds to find a fox ( if they find one ). Is that typical where you hunt?
Re: Grey fox dogs
Yeah scrubrunner the rabbit population goes up and down here but grey fox are thin here. I don't know what the fox per acre is here but I wouldn't be scared to say 1 for every hundred acres or so. Just don't find many tracks and see very few crossing the roads at night. I do have one coming up in my yard at night tempting me to open the gates on him lol. But from what I see on here they have grey fox out west like we have coon and armadillo here. Seems to be a lot better population out there.

I ran Friday night and had a coyote race. Never any trouble finding one of those to run. I know some don't like to run them but I'll take a good coyote race any night. Turkey season closed last Thursday so that was the first time I've ran in 2 months. Had a good 4 dog race. Quiet and cool and a good dew on the ground. You could here for a long way.

Re: Grey fox dogs
we aint got many grey fox here , I feel like 1 in maybe 5000 acres or more, and this time of year even less sow fox backed up with little ones and aint gona find her and if you do aint gona run her seen them fresh in the road dogs smell them and cant do anything with them seems like the further they go on it the worse it gets, male fox don't change they can run him but finding him is tough sometimes, seen a lot of people cuss the dogs this time of year and get rid of some, but most of the time it aint the dogs fault right now, about the end of September thing will start changing and running will be pickin up, and what seemed like sorry dogs will start shining again, I believe in Carolina they infested with fox they go to put them on the tailgate, and have seen pictures of 5 and 6 on the tailgate , dogs catch them

Re: Grey fox dogs
Yes the fox running here is lousy this time of year too, but it usually picks back up some around the first of July. My cousin that lives about a mile from me has a red fox that's coming up to his house and barking at the yard dog. He said the dog will chase it to a brush pile a couple 100 yds. Out in the field and turn around and come back to the house and that the fox will come out and follow the dog right back to the yard, bark at the dog and do it all over again. He said he has watched them do it several times in the last month. The dog is about a 30 lb. mutt too it's not a little lap dog.
