Need tips on how to hunt coons with terriers

Postby JOKER09 » Mon Aug 13, 2012 1:54 am

Ok my jagd so far have treed some coons before on his own but me and my bros just got back from a hunting trip and my jagd got noting for two nights that we were there. We are really new to coon hunting so all we did was walk on trails and wait for our jagd to pick up the scent. I dont know what it is but we be walking next to creeks, swaps, some brush piles, corn fields, hills and got nothing. Kind of disappointed that my dog found nothing, but what can i do or what training do i have to do with my dog to find more coons? Or what do I need to know to get more coons for him?

how old is your jagd? he might just need some experience finding colder scents. you could always run some drags with him to work on trailing. When i started out trying to catch coons I ran lots of drags then when i hunted I just did the same thing walked the creeks, rivers, and orchards and slowly but surely they caught more coons and trailed and treed faster each time. Just keep it up. Also what time of day are you hunting?

i went out from 9 to 2 at night but got nothing, i was thinking it was because of the place we went to cause there was some much corn fields and maybe the coons was to spread out or something, but yes need to really work on drags more. My jagd is three now, trees really good but tracking one is a little harder.

The more he trees, the harder he will hunt, he will start getting excited because he knows he will be praised at the end of the race. By treeing game he's making his owner happy and getting a reward, once he's got that figured out your set. Try the drags also try running some, trainers or ferals if thats ok in your state.

Just went back to a different place yesterday night, got nothing again. Released him at 9 and ran for 2 hours, trailed some tracks a couple of times but didn't find anything. I guess he and "I" need more training :\ But physically he is ready for action but needs more info on what he is going to hunt.

maybe, try going out at a different time, in the coon section on the "dead hours'' post some of the guys mention the prime time to run coons. Could he be trailing other stuff as well i.e deer, fox, coyote? Things that don't tree or maybe a fox thats just losing him and he keeps picking it back up just can't jump and tree it?

He hunts anything, trying to trash break him but his hunting is to strong so i put on him a shock collar. He does know that when we go out at night it means that he has to chase coons but does chase any other scent that he doesnt know. I usually go around 9 to 2 sometimes, but never been from 3 to 6. I guess next time i need to go deeper into the woods and see if it makes a difference, or go earlier at night and earlier in the morning and hope that he can track more coons for me.

Just keep getting him out. Try during the day along sloughs. Mine find coon day and night doesn't matter. Just get on him about the rough stuff and fire him up on coon. Not much on drags prefer to have them chase the real thing.
